Remarks |
In the first half of 1901, Henri Goovaerts lived with his wife and son in Paris, where he was commissioned by the German merchant Karl Schmitz-Scholl (1868-1933) to copy some paintings by Titian, Poussin, Watteau, Rembrandt and De Hooch in the Louvre. For 206 French francs, Goovaerts bought a six-month subscription to the Académie Julian to attend the live model drawing classes in the evening. Many drawings from this period have survived. A number of these are included in this catalogue. A similar portrait of the model we see here is known by the Dutch artist Hendrik de Court Onderwater (1877-1905), who had been living in Paris for several years at the time and also studied at the Académie Julian. Goovaerts and De Court Onderwater must have known each other. They lived in the same building, at Rue Fontaine 24, and most likely drew this model during the same drawing session (see https://henkdecourtonderwater.nl/thema/portretten/). |
