Remarks |
In 1891 Joannes Jacobus (Jean) Schutgens (1833-1910) was director of a pottery in Jemappes in Belgium when he was asked by Frederik Regout to be the director of a new pottery in Maastricht. This factory would be taken over in 1896 by Petrus Regout and later on merge with the Royal Sphinx. The Portrait of John Schutgens is painted on the occasion of his retirement as a factory director in Maastricht, probably in 1896. The painting was restored about 2010 by Restoration Studio Driessen in Maastricht. Part of this was a slight reduction of the canvas because of the frayed edges. |
