Remarks |
The man resembles a photo of Hermann Schmitz in the archives of Lily Goovaerts. Hermann Schmitz (1862-1942) was a high government official of the State of Hamburg and a wealthy art lover. He got to know Henri Goovaerts during Goovaerts’ study tour in Italy. Schmitz was impressed by the talent of Goovaerts and decided to support him. He was of great influence for the course of life of Henri Goovaerts since he kept bringing him into contact with clients in Germany and abroad as long as Goovaerts lived. According to the biographical sketch on Henri Goovaerts written by his wife Lily in 1947 (archive of Lily Goovaerts), Goovaerts painted a portrait of Hermann Schmitz in 1899 in Hamburg. This could be a preliminary study of the portrait. |
