Remarks |
Due to the stamp on the back of the painting we may assume that this painting dates from the first half of 1901. During this period, Henri Goovaerts was staying with his wife and child in Paris. Because of an assignment from the German merchant Karl Schmitz-Scholl from Mülheim he made copies of paintings by Titian, Rembrandt and Watteau in the Louvre. In the evening he attended the Académie Julian in Montmartre, where he drew and painted from life. The archive of Lily Goovaerts contains a membership card of the Académie Julian for the period from January 28 to July 28, 1901. |
