Headings
Remarks Dr. Leon Schols (1848-1902) was a doctor and archaeologist in Maastricht. He left his entire library and collections to the city of Maastricht. This portrait was made to mark the twenty-fifth jubilee of Dr. Leon Schols. In 1900 this painting was shown at an art exhibition, about which the newspaper wrote: ‘By Henri Goovaerts we saw a portrait of our esteemed Dr. S., in which we again recognize our townsman as a serious portrait painter who, somewhat impressionist, seems to strive for putting something of the state of mind on the canvas in the spirit of ms. Schwartze’ (De Tijd, June 19, 1900). With Miss Schwartze is meant the Dutch portrait painter and contemporary Thérèse Schwartze. In 1904 a copy of this portrait was made by Baron von Geusau (1857-1906), who was a friend of Henri Goovaerts. Below left the copy shows the heading: ‘after H. GOOVAERTS 1897. // B. von Geusau 1904.’ A picture of that copy is shown here due to lack of a good picture of the original painting. The current location of the copy is by the way unknown.
