Remarks |
Charles Henri Bogaert (1835-1892) was a Royal Navy commander. This portrait was probably painted following his promotion to Rear Admiral in March 1890. In the same year Bogaert was also appointed Director and Commander of the Navy in Den Helder, the main naval base of the Netherlands (reference: Nieuw Nederlandsch Biografisch Woordenboek, Leiden 1911-1937). Henri Goovaerts knew the well-to-do Bogaert family from his hometown Maastricht. Goovaerts also painted Charles' wife Virginie, his brother Albert, his sister Angeline and his father Philip. |
