This painting is only known from a photograph in Lily Goovaerts's archive. According to a description on the back of the photo, this young lady originates from the distinguished family Von Waldthausen and was married to Wilhelm Schmitz-Scholl. Wilhelm Schmitz-Scholl and his younger brother Karl Schmitz-Scholl owned the famous company Tengelmann, a wholesale business of colonial goods founded by their father. About 1900 Henri Goovaerts painted on commission for the Schmitz-Scholl family in Mülheim an der Ruhr as well as for the Von Waldthausen family in Essen. At the Von Waldthausens, in 1896, he was introduced to his future wife Lily Meyer, who served as a governess at their residence. |
