Remarks |
In 1906, the birth of Rembrandt three hundred years earlier was greatly celebrated in the Netherlands. As part of this, the Maastricht literary Herman Knippenberg (1879-1964) wrote the Rembrandt song, which was put to music by the composer Guus Oterdissen, a brother-in-law of Henri Goovaerts. In his 'Memoriaal', Knippenberg says that he has pleasant memories of the international art exhibition held in Maastricht in 1906 where, among others, Henri Goovaerts exhibited some works: 'Goovaerts drew a lithography for my Rembrandt song, performed on that occasion by one hundred and twenty singers. It appeared at [printing company] Leiter-Nypels.' (H.H. Knippenberg, Memoriaal. Herinneringsbeelden met enige portretten en naamregister, pages 75-76). The picture here shows the detail of the print on which the illustration can be seen. On the entire print, all seven couplets of the Rembrandt song are printed, as well as the names of the singers. |
