Remarks |
Jacob Pascal Wijnandts (1797-1855) was Mayor of Maastricht from 1851 to 1855. In the biographical sketch on Henri Goovaerts, his wife Lily writes that there have been three periods of time in which Goovaerts painted portraits of mayors. The first period was around 1896, when he had a small studio at the Market in Maastricht 'in the house of Mrs. Roymans'. There he portrayed mayors from the city of Maastricht after old photographs and small drawings. The second period was at the end of 1902 when he lived with his parents for several months in Maastricht between his stays in Germany and Switzerland. The third period was around 1907 when he had settled on the Papenweg in Maastricht where he had his own studio at home. This portrait may stem from the first or second period. |
