The Maastricht Civic Guard was founded in 1815. Its purpose was to preserve the peace and to protect the city against hostile raids. When the Civic Guard was to be dissolved in 1906, the plan was conceived to paint the officers together in a civic guard portrait. Henri Goovaerts was requested to make this portrait. Just before his death, he made this preliminary study of the group portrait. Eventually he wouldn’t be able to perform the final painting, since he suddenly died on August 23, 1912. Managed by Rob Graafland, Henri Jonas made a copy of this study after the death of Goovaerts. Later on Rob Graafland painted the portraits of the officers in the composition. The civic guard portrait was completed in 1916. |
