Remarks |
The Maastricht Civic Guard was founded in 1815. Its purpose was to preserve the peace and to protect the city against hostile raids. When the Civic Guard was to be dissolved in 1906, the plan was conceived to paint the officers together in a civic guard portrait. Henri Goovaerts was requested to make this portrait. In addition to this sketch, a preliminary study by Goovaerts exists, with the dimensions of the final painting. Due to his abrupt end of life Henri Goovaerts could no longer execute this painting himself. The Maastricht painters Jonas, Eberhard and Graafland would paint the final civic guard portrait in the period 1912-1916 according to the design of Goovaerts.
