Remarks |
In 1892 Virginie Francisca Wilhelmina Hubertina Heusch (1864-1924) married Navy Commander Charles Bogaert, who was almost thirty years older and who had been portrayed by Goovaerts in 1890. Virginie and Charles were married for only four months when Charles died after a brief illness. This portrait was made five years after the death of Charles. In spite of her beautiful gown and the glittering jewelery, the young widow still looks sad.
Henri Goovaerts painted a total of five portraits of members of the wealthy Maastricht family Bogaert. Besides Virginie and her husband Charles, Goovaerts painted around 1890 Charles' father, his brother Albert and his sister Angeline. The portrait of Angeline however is not known to us. |
