Remarks |
Henri Goovaerts arrived in Madrid on March 1, 1893, after a long journey from Venice, via Genoa and Barcelona. This is where the final part of his Prix de Rome study trip begins. In Madrid he is initially taken care of by the Spanish painters family Madrazo. ‘So last night Mr Madrazo presented me to the Cercle des artistes, a very nice place,’ Goovaerts writes on March 3, 1893 to J.H. van Eeghen, secretary of the Supervisory Committee of the Rijksakademie. ‘In the evening there is nude drawing from 7 to 9 and a dressed model from 9 to 11. I have registered as a member and am going to draw this evening.’ Henri Goovaerts probably kept visiting the Cercle for the rest of his stay in Madrid (until the end of July 1894); therefore it is likely that this drawing was made here. ‘I work in the Cercle in the evening. It is a very well-equipped room and people work with electric light. However for the model this light is too strong, everything becomes harsh. Here I made several drawings [...].’ (Letter from Henri Goovaerts to his teacher August Allebé, dated 17 April 1893. The letters quoted are kept in file 239 of the archive of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, Noord-Hollands Archief, Haarlem ) |
