Remarks |
Maria Josephina Hubertina Hollman (1844-1924) was the eldest sister of violinist and composer Joseph Hollman and widow of brewer Gerard Marie Alphonse Hustinx (1841-1898).
With this painting Goovaerts received the first prize at the International Exposition, mounted by the Momus Society in 1906.
‘As a mature artist he remained a child of his time. That may sound paradoxical, the typical romantic scenery in which he placed the old lady Hustinx - in one of his finest paintings - proves it.’ (De Maasbode, May 11, 1950)
Approx. 1910 Henri Goovaerts made two copies of this portrait in his studio in the village of Sint Pieter, probably intended for relatives of Maria Hustinx-Hollman.
